I’m about to share with you one of my most favorite places in the Kansas City metropolitan area. It’s appropriate for breakfast, lunch, brunch, and dinner. And also dessert, if you’re a traditionalist.
It’s The Upper Crust Pie Bakery in historical downtown Overland Park. Their pie (and cookies) are perfect. The coffee on tap — Thou Mayest — is perfect. The décor is perfect. The (actual) spoons for stirring cream into your coffee are perfect. Even the jelly jars for a little ice water are simply perfect.
The pie is first rate (excellent ingredients and careful presentation) and a perfectly acceptable breakfast, particularly if you choose a slice of the oatmeal variety or order some quiche. They sell it by the slice, by the entire pie (I’m told it’s helpful to order those in advance), and in mini pies (which would make a beautiful “little something” gift for just about anyone but mostly me…please make it oatmeal.).
The cookies are divine. I would suggest the Burnt Sugar Frosted Banana Cookie and the Lemon Sugar cookie. Be sure to bring your husband a Chocolate Chipper or he may complain (repeatedly) if you forget . One. Stinking. Time.
The atmosphere is simply lovely — like sitting on a stylish neighbor’s front porch (a neighbor that makes a killer pie). The décor is simple and creative — vintage and reimagined items as a pretty backdrop to home goods and pie memorabilia available for sale.
